Departing from either Bournemouth Pier or Swanage Pier, we cruise along the coast, past Sandbanks to North Haven Point and Poole Harbour.
Brownsea Island occupies a dominant position at the harbour entrance, so it's clear to see why the first castle to be built on the island in the 1500s was designed to defend Poole against invasion from Europe.
The island has a fascinating history which includes being the site of the first Scout camp, organised by Lord Baden-Powell in 1907. Since 1962 the island has been owned by the National Trust and is a delightful, unspoilt haven with stunning views across Poole Harbour, Studland Bay and the Purbeck Hills. Wildlife is plentiful, and if you take the opportunity to follow one of the three specially marked trails you may be lucky enough to see peacocks, red squirrels, ducks, geese and deer.
There is a nature reserve on the island, a church which is open to visitors, quaint spots which are ideal for picnicking, and a National Trust gift shop and coffee shop. The castle, however, is not open to visitors.
